Bigatt Hotel & Restaurant
A place to escape from the everyday buzz. To get a clear mind and disconnect from busy routines and reconnect with the beauties of life. A retreat only a few minutes away from Lugano Paradiso.
A place carefully created to make the visitors feel welcomed. A breathtaking view from the Restaurant's terrace, a well maintained organic vegetable garden, a vineyard, a unique pool and cosy rooms are only a few of the features that can describe the Bigatt experience. The passionate staff and the social cause behind the project round the experience even further.
"A Hotel, a Restaurant and much more, created to promote work integration for people who are typically excluded from the job market. With the commitment of skilled professionals and enthusiastic supporters." Individuals usually stay six months up to two years at Bigatt to receive the proper training and get the confidence to be reintegrated in the job market.
The products used in the kitchen are all organic, fresh, and whenever possible, self-grown in the vegetable garden. The idea is to, eventually, become self-sufficient concerning vegetables. The menus are created weekly by the chef Daniele and his team, according to the current season and availability of local farmer's products. And like any good slow food location, you can expect home-made bread and home-made pasta daily.
The vegetable garden is a little gem. Melanzane, Pomodori, Aglio, Origano, Ravanelli to only name a few of the Italian terms you will find separating the crops (an excellent chance to expand your Italian vocabulary ;)). I've spent the morning observing and capturing the pictures of the workers nurturing the plants with such care that it transcended a meditative state and inspired me to write a little bit about the observation. Read the thoughts here.
Accompanying the delicious food, you will be able to choose the perfect wine. Ana, the wine expert, will be able to assist you throughout. The wines are all from the region, with the house wine (Il Murchi) being from the vineyard that you'll see behind the hotel/ restaurant. Booking a wine degustation is also something that I can highly recommend. An interesting fact: Bondola is a type of grape that can only be found in the northern region of Tessin.
Bigatt has its premises on a hill, on the way up to the famous and local attraction, San Salvator - a little mountain summit. If you are an early bird, you can go up and enjoy the sunrise with the breathtaking panorama view. If you wake up early enough, you might even get a glimpse of the dears that wander around the garden of the hotel before the sun rises.
A magical place. Non-profit, social and ecological. The place to be.
A curious fact: Bigatt is the name for Silkworm in the local "ticinese" dialect. The trees you'll find in the terrace are the ones where silkworms make their magic happen.
